Gränna
The hometown of the peppermint rock candy cane
Stroll through the charming streets and narrow alleys of Gränna and watch artisan confectioners make candy canes at one of the ‘polkagris’ kitchens. Stop by the Grenna Museum and take a deep dive into Andrée’s polar expedition.
In the mid-19th century, Amalia Erikson launched the candy cane, which became Gränna’s main feature and one of Sweden’s most popular souvenirs. Today, there are about a dozen candy cane factories in Gränna where you can see how the production is done. Here, caramels are boiled, pulled, kneaded and twisted in Amalia’s spirit, and at some of the factories you can even try your hand at baking your own candy canes.
Rosenlunds rosarium
Not far from the centre of Jönköping you’ll find Rosenlund Rosarium. This garden is recognized as one of the world’s most visited rosariums, a distinction earned when it became the first Swedish rosarium to receive the ‘Award of Garden Excellence’ in 2022.
You will find Rosenlund Rosarium scenically located in an area of Jönköping that has both cultural and historical importance, and within walking distance to the beach by Lake Vättern. There are lots of beautiful roses to find here, but also exotic trees and perennials. Guided tours are also on offer.
Tändsticksmuseet
There are only three matchstick museums in the world and one of these is the Matchstick Museum in central Jönköping. It is located on the southern shore of Lake Vättern in a beautiful, listed wooden building dating from 1848.
At the Matchstick Museum you will meet both the people and the machines that built up the matchstick industry and helped develop it into a global company. If you visit the museum with children, there are lots of fun activities, such as looking for hidden giant matches or making your own matchboxes.
The Tuscany of Småland – Äppledalen
Just north of Huskvarna, you’ll find Äppledalen, the Tuscany of Småland. In this valley you’ll find orchards with long rows of apple trees, and whilst you enjoy this beautiful setting, you can find places to sit and have a cup of coffee or something to eat, or you can visit one of the small enterprises that sell locally produced food and unique design goods. Äppledalen is a well worth the trip all year round.
