General Practice is both the powerhouse and risk sink of medicine – and as community evidenceologists, we are facing rising tide of non evidence based healthcare interventions that risk overdiagnosis and overtreatment, leading to worse health for our patients – both the over and under treated. How can we use our knowlege, skills and abilities to help redress the balance and make our work sustainable and equitable?
Margaret McCartney is a General Practitioner in Scotland and senior lecturer at the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews. She is Director of the Centre for Evidence and Values in Healthcare and is a regular contributor to the lay media on issues relating to evidence based medicine.
