Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence has the potential to transform healthcare. What role could it play in increasing diagnostic accuracy, improving efficiency, and supporting clinicians in a primary care characterized by high complexity and strained resources? AI tools already exist which can help with administrative tasks, triage, prediction, and large-scale data interpretation.
However, meaningful evidence of benefit is still in an early phase and there are obstacles.
The emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and narrative understanding of illness in general practice raises critical questions about AI’s role. If AI can technically match or exceed doctors in specific tasks, can it uphold the human aspects of care – listening, empathy, and contextual judgement?
The panel will explore “gold nuggets” where AI could augment clinician capacity, but also the risks of reducing care to algorithmic outputs. We will also address the risk of “enshittification” and whether AI might inadvertently shift focus from patient-centered goals to measurable but less meaningful optimisable targets. The panel aims to offer a balanced, practitioner-centered perspective on navigating AI’s potential and pitfalls in tomorrow’s healthcare landscape.
